Political Haiku and Tanka Too

White House and Congress
bought and managed by donors —
puppet theater.

*****

An epidemic —
political hypocrites —
Today’s GOP.

*****

Unlimited cash
from corporations to pols —
democracy dies.

****

Economic growth
still not translating to jobs —
Republicans shrug.

*****

Republican cuts
to budget sure to kill jobs —
Boehner: “So be it.”

*****

Deliberately
destroying economy
seemed unthinkable.
No longer a silly thought —
GOP election goal.

******

Author’s Note: These haiku and tanka were inspired in part by the following prompts: puppet, epidemic, unlimited, growth, and silly.

  1. Money rules, huh? What’s GOP?

  2. Great words. It’s the same this side of the Pond, too.

  3. Stan Ski says:

I almost forgot how good you are at this – great satire.

  4. Tilly Bud says:

Excellent work. ‘democracy dies’ must be the saddest phrase in English.

This is impressive work. You always make me go….yeah! I’m with you.

  6. Hansi says:

I’m the choir, and I love when you preach to it. Too bad those most in need aren’t reading your stuff. Donald Trump for President! That way when people say the Prez is an A-hole, everyone will agree :)

  7. pamelasayers says:

Yes, to all of them, Madeleine.
The “Grand Old Party” what a bunch of dunces.
I guess now you know, I am a Democrat :)

  8. Adore your play on puppet theatre! Constant biting at the political stage is clever, fun and don’t forget quite a serious view of reality! Even though I have no idea what GOP means, the crunch of your words can still translate effectively into similar scenarios worldwide! An interesting piece!

  9. jingle says:

    witty words.
    well done,

  10. @Hansi: ha ha ha, that’s a good one!

Madeleine, I applaud your political haiku. You and RJ are so good at limericks and other shorter forms, while I tend to go on and on. The best, for me, was the Boehner poem. It’s so sad, so true. There’s a lot to be said for political poetry. (Yeah, I know…!) ;)

Vivienne, GOP stands for Grand Old Party, which is the Republican Party.

powerful message here. it goes to show that politics actually wears one mask around the globe. we’ve got to keep in mind though that each puppet has a puppeteer. a scary thought.

  28. madkane says:

Thanks so much PinkLady. Yes, scary indeed.
