A Turkey Of A Term (Limerick)

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Just in time for Thanksgiving, here’s one turkey of a term:

A Turkey Of A Term (Limerick)
By Madeleine Begun Kane

The term of the day has no charm,
And for some it can cause some alarm.
It’s a spot in the gov
Filled with patronage love.
Have you guessed what I mean? “Turkey Farm.”

Note: According to Taegan Goddard’s Political Dictionary, a “Turkey Farm” is a “government agency or department staffed primarily with political appointments and other patronage hires.”

Americans gaze at the sky
On a hot, muggy 4th of July,
Watching fireworks flash
At a flag-waving bash.
Others catch forty winks on the sly.

July 2014 Update: My original “line five” back when wrote this in 2010 was:

“A brief respite from life gone awry.”

But I’ve decided that it’s too depressing, so I changed it to:

“Some even pretend that they’re high.”

But a few hours later I changed it yet again to:

“Others catch forty winks on the sly.”
