After living my whole life in homes that didn't have security systems and feeling perfectly safe my luck finally ran out and my home was broken into. I was completely surprised at how it easy it was for the burglar to get in, because even though my house was locked up tight, all it took was a simple crow-bar to do the trick. The police investigator that took my report informed me that these things happen every day in the city I live in and it is so common that most of them don't even make it into the news papers anymore.
He further went on to say that unless it had a security system in it, any home can be broken into in a matter of seconds the same way that my home was broken into. The property that was taken could be easily replaced but the sense of violation that I felt was indescribable. The person who did it had even gone into my refrigerator and taken a grape soda out and the empty can was left sitting on my dining room table.
Within the week I had a complete ADT security system installed in my home and felt so stupid for not doing it when I first moved into the home. The ADT installation technicians were a great group of guys and they told me that they see people like me all the time who wait until something happens before they have a system installed. I found out it could have been worse, because the carbon monoxide detection components of the system can save my life and that people are killed every year by faulty heating systems that can turn a home into a poisonous gas chamber.
I was shocked to learn that carbon monoxide has no smell and people who are poisoned by it never know a thing, they just fall asleep and never wake up again. They also explained how the system will also alert me to freezing temperatures that can cause my water pipes to burst and that would do far more damage that the burglar did. The ADT system that they installed even has sensors in my home that can detect a rise in the ambient temperature and automatically call the fire department.
It is as though the ADT system covers my home with a complete blanket of security now and the level of technology that it does this with is absolutely amazing. I have seen alarm systems before that have to be deactivated by the homeowner scurrying to a control panel to quickly type in a code and I really wasn't looking forward to having to do that.
As it turns out my system is activated and deactivated by a simple device that goes on my key chain just like my car alarm. That night me and my wife shared a bottle of wine and celebrated our new free security system and shared a toast to the irony of the fact that it took an unknown burglar to inspire us to get something that we actually needed all along.
