{"id":4539,"date":"2011-02-16T01:44:16","date_gmt":"2011-02-16T05:44:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.madkane.com\/madness\/?p=4539"},"modified":"2013-01-15T18:14:22","modified_gmt":"2013-01-15T22:14:22","slug":"clarence-thomas-humor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.madkane.com\/madness\/2011\/02\/16\/clarence-thomas-humor\/","title":{"rendered":"Limerick Ode To Clarence Thomas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Supreme Court Justice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/archives\/individual\/2011_02\/028005.php\">Clarence Thomas is under scrutiny<\/a> these days for conflicts of interest related to the Koch Brothers, the <em>Federalist Society<\/em>, and the <em>Citizens United<\/em> case. <\/p>\n<p>But today&#8217;s limerick and haiku will focus, instead, on the fact that Thomas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/13\/us\/13thomas.html\">hasn&#8217;t asked a single appellate hearing question in five years.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>For the record, I did quite a bit of litigation work during my lawyering years.   And believe me, his failure to  speak throughout five years of hearings is peculiar and reflects very poorly on his judicial skills.<\/p>\n<p>That brings me to my Clarence Thomas limerick:<\/p>\n<p>Limerick Ode To Clarence Thomas<br \/>\nBy Madeleine Begun Kane<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m mindful that Thomas can talk,<br \/>\nBut at queries for hearings he&#8217;ll balk.<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s been silent for years&#8211;<br \/>\nFive in all.  I&#8217;m all ears.<br \/>\nIf he asks one sharp question, I&#8217;ll gawk.<\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s my Clarence Thomas haiku:<\/p>\n<p>The Sup Court&#8217;s Thomas&#8211;<br \/>\nToo ill-informed for queries?<br \/>\nOr just too lazy?<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong>  It&#8217;s been nearly two years since I wrote this limerick and haiku.  So in fairness, I must announce that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2013\/01\/justice-thomas-speaks\/\">Justice Thomas has finally broken his silence.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now mind you, he didn&#8217;t ask a sharp question &#8230; or, indeed, any question:  He merely made a mildly amusing four-word (or so) remark about lawyers who went to Yale.<\/p>\n<p>Still &#8230; it&#8217;s a start.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is under scrutiny these days for conflicts of interest related to the Koch Brothers, the Federalist Society, and the Citizens United case.
