{"id":36,"date":"2006-10-16T17:49:24","date_gmt":"2006-10-16T21:49:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.madkane.com\/madness\/2006\/10\/16\/trade-deficit-budget-deficit-truth-deficit\/"},"modified":"2006-10-16T19:05:05","modified_gmt":"2006-10-16T23:05:05","slug":"trade-deficit-budget-deficit-truth-deficit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.madkane.com\/madness\/2006\/10\/16\/trade-deficit-budget-deficit-truth-deficit\/","title":{"rendered":"Trade Deficit, Budget Deficit, Truth Deficit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every time I start thinking the press may finally be doing its job, I run across another example of media laziness and gullibility.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/bacb5bc0-5a1c-11db-8f16-0000779e2340.html\">record shattering August U.S. trade deficit<\/a> received minimal coverage, almost as if it were a non-event.<\/p>\n<p>Yet\u00a0many &#8220;journalists&#8221; seemed all too eager to report, unchallenged, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europac.net\/externalframeset.asp?id=6414\">Bush&#8217;s &#8220;halving the budget deficit&#8221; claim,<\/a> though this assertion is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bismarckdems.com\/index.php?option=com_content&#038;task=view&#038;id=377&#038;Itemid=67\">patently false.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But perhaps I&#8217;m not being fair.\u00a0Cause let&#8217;s face it,\u00a0 Bush style accounting could improve just about anybody&#8217;s budget.\u00a0Think how rosy yours would look if, with the flick of a black pen, you moved major expenses (housing? energy?) off budget.<\/p>\n<p>And now it&#8217;s time for a limerick duo:<\/p>\n<p>Trading On Fiction<br \/>\nBy Madeleine Begun Kane<\/p>\n<p>The trade gap is higher than ever.<br \/>\nWill Republicans fix it?
