By now, everyone’s surely seen\u00a0Barry Blitt’s New Yorker cover,<\/a> depicting Barack Obama as a\u00a0flag-burning,\u00a0bin Laden-loving, fist-bumping\u00a0Muslim.\u00a0 Intended to satirize “The Politics of Fear,” the image is being widely criticized as reinforcing the very stereotypes it seeks to mock.<\/p>\n

Cartoonist Tom Tomorrow has a very interesting take on the topic here<\/a> and here,<\/a> as does cartoonist Ruben Bolling here,<\/a> and Don Davis here,<\/a> here,<\/a> here,<\/a> and here.<\/a> \u00a0The New York Times queries some late night talk show hosts here<\/a>\u00a0and Mark Karlin of Buzzflash speaks out here.<\/a><\/p>\n

Here’s my view in verse:<\/p>\n

A Humorist’s Lament
\nMadeleine Begun Kane<\/p>\n

A humorist like me sure knows
\nHow tough it is to write, compose,
\nAnd sketch satiric toons and prose
\nAnd poems.\u00a0 It’s not without its woes.<\/p>\n

For instance, Barry Blitt’s lampoon,
\nNew Yorker’s well-intentioned toon,
\nIs meant to show as crass buffoon
\nThe lie and bias-spreading goon.<\/p>\n

The humor quand’ry, if you please:
\nThis toon could fit with equal ease
\nIn any right-wing, racist sleaze
\nAnd readily its readers please.<\/p>\n

That’s why it\u00a0draws this fit of pique
\nFor spreading what it would critique,
\nConfirming to the knowledge-weak:
\nBarack Obama — Terr’ist Sheik!<\/p>\n
