It tends to lull us into thinking that the opportunity for House wingnuts to wreak havoc has been largely eliminated for a substantial period of time.<\/p>\n<p>But that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/political-animal-a\/2015_10\/government_shutdown_still_poss058376.php\">really isn&#8217;t true<\/a>. Why not?  Because, generally speaking, there are three broad opportunities for Tea Party types to threaten or cause shutdowns.<\/p>\n<p>1: Budget bills.<\/p>\n<p>2: Debt ceiling crises.<\/p>\n<p>3: Appropriation bills.<\/p>\n<p>And, alas, only the first two items on that list were resolved, leaving ample opportunities for <a href=\" http:\/\/prospect.org\/article\/battle-budget-isnt-over\">essential appropriation bills to be saddled with unacceptable riders<\/a>.  For instance, riders eliminating Obamacare or defunding Planned Parenthood, to name just two.  In other words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nRight-wing Republicans can still pursue their goals through riders on appropriations bills\u2014and, if they don\u2019t get their way, shut down the government.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With Ryan as Speaker, don&#8217;t think<br \/>\nThat we aren&#8217;t stuck right on the brink<br \/>\nOf Tea Party trouble.<br \/>\nIt still can cause rubble<br \/>\nThrough spending bills yet to gain ink.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the budget&#8217;s resolved<br \/>\nAnd the ceiling on debt ain&#8217;t involved,<br \/>\nShould not make you relieved.<br \/>\nIf you are, you&#8217;re deceived,<br \/>\nCuz the poison pill risk isn&#8217;t solved.<\/p>\n<p>The House must appropriate cash,<br \/>\nVia bills which the wingnuts can trash<br \/>\nThrough riders from guys<br \/>\nWith Tea Party ties,<br \/>\nTurning programs we need into ash.<\/p>\n<p>If that happens, then what can be done?<br \/>\nOnly vetoes, and those aren&#8217;t fun.<br \/>\nBut the blackmailing Hill<br \/>\nCan&#8217;t prevail on such bill!<br \/>\nAre there any good choices?  Nay!
