Regarding this penchant to create new words Palin claims to share with Shakespeare: No! No! No! No! No!

When Shakespeare coined a word, it was the result of careful thought informed by a deep knowledge of contemporary English as well as Latin and the contemporary Romance languages as well as Ancient Greek. His neologisms were calculated to fit the rhyme scheme and meter of iambic pentameter as well as evoke specific meanings in his audience.

Whatever Palin meant to write, the word she used was a non-word which came out of a mind of far less talent and education than Shakespeare’s.

In brief:

Governor Palin, I’ve been privileged to see many of Shakespeare’s plays performed live.

I’ve studied the texts of other plays and can recite many of the soliloquies and monologues from memory.

I’ve read his biography as well as critical essays written by leading Shakespearean scholars.

Shakespeare is very important to me.

Governor Palin, you’re no William Shakespeare.
