{"id":5477,"date":"2011-04-06T03:27:16","date_gmt":"2011-04-06T07:27:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.madkane.com\/humor_blog\/?p=5477"},"modified":"2011-04-06T03:29:40","modified_gmt":"2011-04-06T07:29:40","slug":"emily-dickinson-humor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.madkane.com\/humor_blog\/2011\/04\/06\/emily-dickinson-humor\/","title":{"rendered":"Dear Emily Dickinson, Please Forgive Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of its National Poetry Month and Poem In Your Pocket Day &#8220;Envelope Project&#8221; celebrations, New York City is running an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/poem\/html\/envelope\/project.shtml\">Emily Dickinson related poetry contest.<\/a>  Basically, it involves writing your own poems using Dickinson first lines. <\/p>\n<p>Although I didn&#8217;t enter the contest (I wasn&#8217;t thrilled with its reprint permission form) I chose four Emily Dickinson first lines and wrote four short, whimsical, New York City-inspired poems. Here they are, with Dickinson&#8217;s words noted in italics:<\/p>\n<p><em>I <strong>shall<\/strong> keep singing<\/em> though I&#8217;m bad,<br \/>\nand those who hear me shout, &#8220;Egad!&#8221;<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll never see me on Broadway,<br \/>\nunless you mean my street display.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p><em>The Cricket sang<\/em>.<br \/>\nMy sleep is done.<br \/>\nI&#8217;d sooner hear an engine run.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p><em>I started Early&#8211;Took my Dog<\/em> &#8212;<br \/>\nunleashed  &#8212;  don&#8217;t fret &#8212;<br \/>\nJust  franks and grog.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p><em>A Day! Help! Help!
