Their message?  Most of my <em>haiku<\/em> are by strict definition <em>senryu.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now I hate to admit it, but these sticklers are technically correct.  For while  <em>haiku<\/em> and <em>senryu<\/em> take the same form &#8212; three line, seventeen syllable poems (five-seven-five) &#8212; historically their subject matter and attitude differ.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re waxing poetic about the physical world, chances are what you&#8217;ve written is a classic <em>haiku<\/em>.  Throw in a seasonal reference, and it&#8217;s a <em>haiku<\/em> slam dunk.<\/p>\n<p>But if your topic is human nature and human foibles, it&#8217;s probably best to label your verse a <em>senryu<\/em>, especially if you&#8217;re being satirical.<\/p>\n<p>Confused?  Don&#8217;t worry &#8212;  most people find all this perplexing. In fact, there are lots of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/is-it-or-aint-it-haiku\/\">articles<\/a> discussing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haijinx.org\/I-1\/articles\/welch.html\">this<\/a> very <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ahapoetry.com\/haiku.htm#comego\">question<\/a>, and they don&#8217;t all agree with one another. Which is probably why so many people (like me) tend to take the easy way out and label all of our seventeen syllable masterpieces <em>haiku<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But please don&#8217;t throw up your hands in unpoetic bewilderment. My explanation in the form of a three-verse <em>limerick <\/em>  just might help or, at least,  amuse you:<\/p>\n<p>Haiku Or Senryu, That Is The Question<br \/>\nBy Madeleine Begun Kane<\/p>\n<p>So how do you write a <em>haiku<\/em>?<br \/>\nAnd when&#8217;s a <em>haiku<\/em> <em>senryu<\/em>?<br \/>\nBoth are five-seven-five,<br \/>\nBut heavens alive&#8212;<br \/>\nAll their diff&#8217;rences cause much ado.<\/p>\n<p>The distinction&#8217;s confounding to some.<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t confuse them  &#8212; you might be called &#8220;Bum!&#8221;<br \/>\nIf your verse has unfurled<br \/>\nOn the natural world,<br \/>\nThen you&#8217;ve followed <em>haiku&#8217;s<\/em> rule of thumb.<\/p>\n<p>But if seventeen syllables speak,<br \/>\nNot of nature, but human critique,<br \/>\nWith satirical pearls<br \/>\nMocking people &#8212; guys, girls &#8212;<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ve embarked on a <em>senryu<\/em> streak.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every so often I get missives from poetry purists.
