It\u2019s Limerick-Off time, once again. And that means I write a limerick, and you write your own, using the same first line. Then you post your limerick here and, if you\u2019re a Facebook user, on Facebook too.<\/a><\/p>\n

The best submission will be crowned Limerick Of The Week. (Here\u2019s last week\u2019s Limerick Of The Week Winner.<\/a>)<\/p>\n

How will your poems be judged? By meter, rhyme, cleverness, and humor. (If you\u2019re feeling a bit fuzzy about limerick writing rules, here’s my How To Write A Limerick<\/em><\/a> article.)<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll announce the Limerick of the Week Winner next Sunday, right before I post next week\u2019s Limerick-Off. So that gives you a full week to submit your clever, polished verse. Your submission deadline is Saturday at 10:00 p.m.<\/strong> (Eastern Time.)<\/p>\n

I hope you\u2019ll join me in writing a limerick with this first line:<\/p>\n

A fellow was wielding his drill…*<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

or<\/p>\n

A teacher was trying to drill…*<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

or<\/p>\n

The experienced clerk knew the drill…*<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

or<\/p>\n

A fellow had loaned out his drill…*<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

*<\/strong>(Please note that minor variations to my first lines are acceptable. However, rhyme words may not<\/strong> be altered, except by using homonyms or homophones.)<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s my limerick:<\/p>\n

Limerick Drill
\nBy Madeleine Begun Kane<\/p>\n

As the dentist was wielding his drill,
\nHe yelled at his patient, “Sit still!”
\nThen he bellowed with gravity,
\n“God-awful cavity!
\nIt’s nearly as large as my bill.”<\/p>\n
