NOTE: THIS IS A TWO-WEEK LIMERICK-OFF. LIMERICK SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s Limerick-Off time, once again. And that means I write a limerick, and you write your own, using the same first line. Then you post your limerick here and, if you\u2019re a Facebook user, on Facebook too.<\/a><\/p>\n

The best submission will be crowned Limerick Of The Week. (Here\u2019s last week\u2019s Limerick Of The Week Winner<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

How will your poems be judged? By meter, rhyme, cleverness, and humor. (If you\u2019re feeling a bit fuzzy about limerick writing rules, here’s my How To Write A Limerick<\/em><\/a> article.)<\/p>\n

Please note that due to the holidays, this Limerick-Off will run for two weeks, instead of one. So I\u2019ll announce the Limerick of the Week Winner two weeks from today, on April 27, 2014, right before I post the next Limerick-Off. So that gives you a full two weeks to submit your clever, polished verse. Your submission deadline is Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11 p.m. (Eastern Time.)<\/p>\n

And since you\u2019ll have two weeks, I\u2019m offering you a topical alternative:<\/strong> In addition to your regular challenge, you may write a limerick related to any April holiday, using any first line. And of course I\u2019ll present an extra award \u2014 one for the best holiday-related limerick.<\/p>\n

And now, getting back to your regular Limerick-Off challenge, I hope you\u2019ll join me in writing a limerick with this first line:<\/p>\n

A woman whose budget was strained…*<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

or<\/p>\n

A singer whose voice sounded strained…*<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

or<\/p>\n

A fellow had struggled and strained…*<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

or<\/p>\n

A woman whose mood was restrained…*<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

*<\/strong>(Please note that minor variations to my first lines are acceptable. However, rhyme words may not<\/strong> be altered, except by using homonyms or homophones.)<\/p>\n

Strained Limerick

A chef who had struggled and strained
\nTo serve noteworthy food appeared drained:
\n“I’m losing my shirt,”
\nHe said, scarfing dessert.
\nSeems his rep (and his shirt) had been stained.<\/p>\n
