So it&#8217;s no wonder that the people behind the 2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spellingbee.com\/ruleschanges\">Scripps National Spelling Bee<\/a> have upped the ante, now requiring competitors to actually know what the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2013\/04\/09\/176723940\/new-rule-spelling-bee-will-now-include-definitions-test\">words they&#8217;re spelling mean.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, this is controversial.  And although I think the idea&#8217;s a good one, I sympathize with the contestants. Why?   Because the change is rather last minute.
