Every once in a while I like to experiment with a new (to me) form. Today, it’s the quatern<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Writer’s Digest’s Poetic Asides Blog, which is holding a quatern contest,<\/a> describes the form as follows<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Quatern Poetic Form Rules<\/p>\n

1. This poem has 16 lines broken up into 4 quatrains (or 4-line stanzas).
\n2. Each line is comprised of eight syllables.
\n3. The first line is the refrain. In the second stanza, the refrain appears in the second line; in the third stanza, the third line; in the fourth stanza, the fourth (and final) line.
\n4. There are no rules for rhyming or iambics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here’s the quatern I submitted to WD’s contest:<\/p>\n

Queasy About Quaterns
\nBy Madeleine Begun Kane<\/p>\n

As I attempt to write this verse,
\nI must confess I start to curse.
\nA quatern is what’s been assigned.
\nAlready I am in a bind.<\/p>\n

I feel confused and somewhat terse,
\nAs I attempt to write this verse.
\nSo please forgive me if I whine.
\nMy limericks are where I shine.<\/p>\n

I’d like to stop, but can’t refrain
\nFrom trying this quatern again.
\nAs I attempt to write this verse,
\nI fear that it is getting worse.<\/p>\n

I’m tempted to reject this form.
\nAbout its rules I feel lukewarm.
\nI’m getting ill. I need a nurse,
