Surmounting Marriage

Surmounting Marriage
By Madeleine Begun Kane

Before agreeing to marry my husband Mark, I asked him the usual questions:

  1. Do you know what a hamper is and have you ever actually used one?
  2. Do you spend weekends sprawled in front of a sports-spewing screen, devouring couch potato chips?
  3. Are your parents likely to drive me to drink?

Mark told the appropriate fibs, I pretended to believe him, and several months later we wed. But soon after the wedding, I realized I’d forgotten to ask the most important question of all: When you see a mountain, do you get an irresistible urge to do something stupid?  (Surmounting Marriage is continued here.)

My husband enjoys rock climbing. It is a bit scary to me to think of him partaking in this sport, but I knew before he was a rock climber.

I enjoyed this! I understand my problem now. I forgot to ask my husband those 3 crucial questions!

    Great stuff MadKane!

Mooning Mormons, especially in Utah, is dangerous business!

I like it. That is funny, women see just a bunch of trees in the woods. We men see our caged nomad instincts being fulfilled by hanging, climbing or careering down a cliff like madmen.

Fabulous tale! As Kerouac said, “The only people for me are the mad ones…..” I am delighted to find your site. Now, off to the Mad Poll.

Great tale, reminds me of a similar story that I will write about sometime :)

I got a chuckle from your post! I can relate. My wife and I last summer hiked down a mountain in Virginia and hiked back up with very little water and drinks. We made it back but we were both badly dehydrated and tired. I should know better since I am an experienced hiker. Thanks again for the laugh.

Thanks, Joe! Glad you made it back relatively okay. :)

What a delightful way to end my day… reading this wonderful tale of marriage and mountain climbing! I believe every word of it, having having once decended a mountainside in Germany by the seat of my pants. Your trek thru the hotel lobby would have made great YouTube fodder! Thank you so much for adding this story to Monday Memories!
